Who may perform electrical installations

To be qualified to work with electrical installations in Sweden you need to have the right education and experience, according to the scopes of our authorization types.

Three ways to perform installations

1  Authorised Electrician

“Authorised Electricians” may perform electrical installation work relating to the execution, alteration or repair of electrical installations and installations of electrical devices, where such a voltage, current or frequency that can be dangerous to persons or property. Furthermore, fixed connection/disconnection of devices to and from such an installation, may only be performed by an Authorised electrician.

The definition of an Authorised electrician is a person who has been authorised by The Swedish Electrical Safety board to perform electrical installation work within the scope of The Act on Authorised Electricians (SFS 1990:806).

2  Electrical Technicians Under Supervision

In addition, electrical installations may be performed by others than Authorised electricians. Electrical technicians who are under the supervision of an Authorised electrician may also perform electrical installations.


The supervision of Electrical technicians may only be performed by Authorised electricians. When supervising an Electrical technician the Authorised electrician must ensure that the person doing the electrical installation work under his supervision has the knowledge and skills required for the job. He shall also ensure that the electrical installation has been inspected to the extent necessary to establish that the installation cannot be dangerous to person or property. It is the supervising Authorised electrician that ensures that the Electrical technician has the relevant education.

To sum up, the activities exclusively reserved to the holders of authorisation as Authorised electrician are:

  1. (Independently) performing electrical installation work relating to the execution, alteration or repair of electrical installations and installations of electrical devices, where such a voltage, current or frequency that can be dangerous to persons or property, and fixed connection/disconnection of devices to and from such an installation.
  2. Supervising Electrical technicians when performing electrical installation work covered by 1).

For an applicant to obtain an authorisation as an Authorised electrician the applicant must have the relevant education and experience from performing electrical installation work (under supervision).

3  Temporary Work

An Authorised electrician with qualifications from an EEA country other than Sweden may temporarily perform electrical installation work.

What Types of Authorisations Are There?

There are 4 different kinds of authorisation with various scopes.

General  authorisation AB

All types of electrical installation work.

General authorisation ABL 

All types of electrical installation work on facilites for nominal voltage up to 1 000 volts alternating current or 1500 volts DC.

Limited authorisation BB1

Electrical installation work at low voltage concerning installations of lighting, switching devices and outlets on existing group, and fixed connection and disconnection of the devices.

Limited authorisation BB3 

A special permission and for certain kinds of electrical installation work for assessment of The Swedish Electrical Safety board.
